John Sommers

John was born and raised in Connecticut and developed a passion for baseball at an early age. A four-year varsity letterman in high school, he earned All-Conference honors as a middle infielder and pitcher, and was voted a two-time team captain. He continued his baseball career at Division II Bentley University, before injuries eventually led him to transfer to Bryant University, where he completed his undergraduate degree and served as a two-time captain of the ’02 and ’03 conference championship hockey teams. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served around the world as an intelligence analyst. His time in the Marines gave him a strong foundation in leadership, teamwork, and hard work—core values he continues to bring to coaching today. During his time living in Europe, he coached the RP Outlaws 12U organization, leading young military and international players in tournaments throughout Europe, including Amsterdam, London, Prague, Belgium, and throughout Germany. He also earned his Master's degree from Penn State during that time. Now in his eighth year of coaching, John is passionate about helping young athletes grow both on and off the field. Away from the field, he and his wife Ashley enjoy watching their daughter perform in musical theater and cheering on their three sons as they play baseball at API, hockey with Navy Youth Hockey, and football at South River and DeMatha.
